Build Your Own Pergola - Self Build Tips

To build your own pergola is a satisfying experience. Not only can you save substantial amounts of money, you can also design the pergola from scratch to make it exactly as you wish. Of course it is always wise to use an existing pergola design as a base and then work on it from there to form it into your dream pergola.

Building your own pergola is one of the easier building tasks you can take on, and it can also be one of the most inexpensive provided you do your research and planning correctly. The simplest pergola self build design is the dome shaped garden tent. This design has an umbrella like dome on top fit with a hook.

One of the most time consuming and detailed pergola self build designs would be the porch extension, particularly those which are made with quality wood and incorporate vines and other details into it. It is your choice how much you wish to spend when self building your pergola and how long you want the process to take.

There are many designs and instructions for building your own pergola online, in magazines and in home improvement books. There are so many possible designs and materials to use that the hardest part is often deciding what you want your pergola to look like. The first decision you need to make is about the size of the pergola. Will it be small or large? Map out the prospective position in your garden or backyard and ensure that it will easily fit there. Leave a little extra room just in case of mis-measurement, plant and tree growth and the covering which may stick out further than the pergola itself.

Before you start building, check with your local council whether you need a permit. Generally small pergolas will not but large ones attached to the house may. Ask around with friends if they would also like to build a pergola or similar structure and if so, pitch in together to buy materials in bulk and save.

It is entirely possible to build a small pergola in one weekend if you have a helping hand. It will take at least three, but preferably more, people to assist in the building and assembly process. A pergola self build project brings much satisfaction to the home owner as you can completely match the pergola to the existing look of your home and yard.

A pergola is a beautiful addition to your garden and does not need to be difficult to build yourself. The Fundamentals of Credit Repair Success

You Can Achieve Real Credit Repair Success

There are several important issues to consider before starting your credit repair effort. The time you invest in preparation will save you time and effort, and more importantly, insure that you get the results you deserve from your credit repair project. Take a moment, plan your approach, and proceed thoughtfully. You will succeed!

Make Your Payments on Time

If you are currently not able to keep up with your existing obligations, credit repair is not the right option for you. Before starting a credit repair effort your finances should be stabilized and you should be able to pay your bills on time. There is no point in cleaning up your credit report while derogatory events continue to occur. If you are having trouble paying your bills you should investigate other options, including consumer credit counseling and debt negotiation. You should also consider consulting a bankruptcy attorney.

Get Your Credit Reports

You will need all three reports from the major CRAs (credit reporting agencies) for your credit repair project; they are Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. You can get them for free at AnnualCreditReport.com, but I am sorry to say that I advise against this option, as it is difficult and frustrating. And in the end, should you succeed, you will have three credit reports in different formats, and all about as clear to the layman as reading Chinese. I suggest purchasing a nice tri-merged report. They are easily available on the Internet and should cost less than $20. A good investment in your credit repair success.

Get Your Credit Scores, Maybe

It seems like a nice idea to obtain your credit scores at the outset of your credit repair project so you can track the progress of this important number. Should you choose to do this, you need to be aware of a controversial battle between the credit bureaus and Fair Isaac Corp, the developer of the FICO scoring model. Lenders purchase FICO scores from the credit bureaus to make loan decisions. The credit bureaus, however, will not sell these genuine FICO scores to consumers. Instead they have created their own scores which are meant to mimic the behavior of FICO scores. Unfortunately, they often differ by as much as 100 points. At the moment consumers can purchase genuine FICO scores for their Equifax and TransUnion reports directly from Fair Isaac at MyFICO.com. A single Equifax FICO score is available at Equifax.com. Experian FICO scores are not available to the public.

Read the Fair Credit Reporting Act

You cannot hope to succeed at credit repair without knowing the compliance requirements imposed on the credit bureaus. These requirements are codified in the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). Many people starting a credit repair program assume that it is only necessary to spot and dispute the obvious derogatory errors. If you make this mistake you are likely to leave half of your potential improvement untapped. If you take the time to grasp the essential reporting guidelines of the FCRA you will gain the legal leverage you need to get the credit repair results you deserve.

Read the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act

If you have any collection issues at all you will need a working knowledge of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA). This is not a difficult read and will give you a significant advantage in dealing with both active collections as well as dormant collection accounts on your credit report. Armed with your legal rights you will be able to stop collectors from bothering you, force them to validate their legitimacy, provide you with an accounting of the debt, and force them to remove erroneous and outdated entries from your credit report.

Learn Your Statutes of Limitation

Statutes of limitation define the time limit for collectors to enforce collection of a debt through the court system and are an essential tool in your credit repair arsenal. A statute of limitation (SOL) has no bearing on the reporting period limits that the CRAs are required to enforce. Reporting period limits are generally seven years for derogatory events, whereas SOLs are often as short as three years. When an SOL has expired, a collector has no way to enforce the collection of a debt. This gives you a powerful credit repair advantage; you may opt to ignore the debt with no fear of being sued, or you may choose to negotiate a very favorable payoff.

Consider Professional Help

If you are going to manage your own credit repair effort you must invest the time in understanding your rights and the compliance requirements of all parties involved in the reporting process. But if you decide that you cannot manage the effort it takes to manage the credit repair task properly you should hire a professional. Should you decide on this path I suggest that you write down a list of questions relevant to your case and call several reputable credit repair services and interview them. Choose the company that you are comfortable with and put them to work. Good luck!

Common Home Defects

Common Defect One Fresh Paint: Home inspectors (unless working for Realtors) are not stupid. Fresh paint is frequently and usually applied to cover up another defect.

Common Electrical Hazards:

I have been to thousands of homes and can not tell you why or how some did not have a major electrical fire. Many have such poor wiring and lucky owners (no fire yet)

that I feel like asking the owner to go out and pick some lottery numbers for me. Do not play with electricity, you can cause a fire or electrocute you or others.

Common Defect Rotted Wood Under Plumbing Fixtures:

A water stain or two under a bathroom can cost $15,000 or so to fix. If there is a stain under bathroom assume it is active till proven otherwise and keep in mind additional latent damages must be expected to exist.

Common Defect Water Intrusion Below Grade:

Water in the basement is bad. It can create high moisture conditions conducive to mold and damage storage. Usually surface water is the problem. Installation of gutters, downspouts and improving drainage away from the home are ways to solve may problems. Installation of basement perimeter drains should be a last resort, not a quick fix.

Common Ceiling Stains: All stains are indications of an active leak unless corrective actions have been taken. As home inspectors we lack crystal balls. If stains exist the owner and or contractor must tell you in writing what was done to cure the problem and when or you are taking an open ended risk.

Common Roofing defects: A common problem found during home inspections is problems with the roofing. I swear people would rather sell a home than replace a roof. Roofing removal and replacement can cost $8,000o or so for an average home. The money is well spent because if the roofing is not changed before it fails expensive problems are just about guaranteed to occur.

Common Building Violations Additions and Alterations Without Permits:

Houses are seldom built perfect. Beware of those who tell you all the work in the home was performed by craftsman who pulled all the permits and dealt with all the difficult municipal inspectors. I am sure there are many great municipal inspectors out there. I find it hard to believe the only ones the owner tells us about are the strict ones. I also find it hard to believe they only used the best contractors. If there were that many great contractors out there I would still be a construction project manager.

Michael Del Greco is President of Accurate Inspections, Inc, a home inspection business. He has been a home inspector since 1993 and prior to that spent seven years as a construction project manager. Home inspector training.

10 Ways to Winterize Your FSBO Home

Did you know? Preparing your FSBO home for winter should actually start during the Fall/Autumn season! As temperatures quickly drop you always remember to pull out your coat, gloves, toboggan, and scarf to protect yourself from the harsh cold. Protecting your FSBO home is just as important in order to fight off "Old Man Winter".

Here are 10 tips to help you better prepare your FSBO home for winter:

1. Get your HVAC (Heating & Cooling) Inspected - This could possibly be the most important winterization tip on this list! Call a heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) professional to inspect your furnace. Make sure they check your ductwork to ensure they are free flowing and inspected for holes and/or separated duct joints. Have them change your filter if need be, but on the norm you should do this monthly for most furnace systems.

2. Inspect all your Windows for Cracks and Leaks - Its true windows are often used for air circulation and cool breezes during the summer, but you do not want cold air leaking in during the winter months. Check the exterior window wells for cracks and chipped paint, if need be caulk and seal cracked edges and re-paint wells. If you have cracked glass in your windows you should try to gauge whether or not they need to be replaced completely and if replaced make sure to prime and paint exposed wood to prevent possible air leaks. Last, if you have your summer screens still intact make sure they are swapped out with your glass storm windows as this will give you an added layer of air blocking protection.

3. Inspect all your Doors for Cracks and Leaks - If you can feel a cool breeze or cool air from the bottom or sides of your doors then you possibly need to apply weather stripping. Weather stripping alone can save you up to 20 percent in heating and cooling costs. Basically weather strips are a narrow strip of material (usually plastic) which cover the joint of a door or window to keep out the cold. It's a fairly painless job and will save you tons of energy costs.

4. Inspect Gutters and Downspouts and clean them out - During Autumn we all enjoy seeing the leaves change into many beautiful colors, but with that comes a bit of maintenance on our part. Once the leaves fall from the trees it's almost inevitable they will land in your gutter! Cleaning them out is a bore but it's an essential part of winterizing your FSBO home. Some people hire companies to do this, some people clean them out by hand, but here's my time saving tip: If your roof grade is not too steep try using a leaf blower to clean them out, it makes the job 100 times faster. Keep safety in mind first when you do these things. Never do this alone or if you do not feel comfortable doing it in the first place. Removing the leaves from the gutters and downspout will ensure good drainage when the rain and snow of winter comes, thus keeping back-ups from occurring and water seepage into the house.

5. Inspect your Roof Covering / Shingles - Inspect your roof for loose, damaged, or missing covering such as shingles. While you do this it's very important to check the flashing in order to make sure water is not running into your FSBO home. Flashing is basically a type of sheet metal installed at any break in a shingled roofline to prevent leaks. If you find your roof is leaking or sagging call a roofing professional immediately.

6. Make sure your Attic is properly Insulated - This may be one of the more expensive items on the list, but it's also one that will save you money in the long run. Since heat rises attics are the exact place your heat will escape in larger quantities. Consider adding extra insulation to your attic, especially if you can openly see your ceiling joists. If you're not sure what to look for, a ceiling joist is a parallel framing board used to support ceiling loads.

7. Protect your Plumbing - Pipes and plumbing is a huge concern during the winter. If your pipes freeze it's going to be an extremely expensive fix! Before the first freeze of the year make sure you drain and shut off your sprinkler system and water hoses to avoid frozen and burst pipes. Disconnect all hoses from the spigots and make sure your hoses are drained completely. For extra protection in colder climates you may even want to purchase and install Styrofoam cups which attach to spigots and provide extra insulation. Do not turn your heat completely off during the wintertime, and always know the location of your main water valve in case you need to turn it off for an emergency.

8. Inspect your Foundation for Cracks and Proper Drainage - The winter season usually brings tons of rain and snow. If water is not properly draining away from the house then it could possibly stand still and eventually move towards your house and into the walls. Make sure the downspouts and hose extensions (usually PVC pipe) are aimed away from your house. If need be you can shovel and reshape the dirt to ensure water is running away from your FSBO homes foundation.

9. Inspect your Fireplace - To conserve energy and heating costs make sure the fireplace damper is tightly closed when not in use. If your chimney top is not fully covered then consider purchasing a shielding cap for it with a screen. It's also recommended that if your chimney has not been cleaned in a while that you get it professionally swept to wipe out whatever creosote and soot that has formed.

10. Check your various Alarms - Unfortunately there are thousands of residential fires each year that could have been prevented by simply checking Smoke Detector batteries with the push of a button. You should probably change the batteries in your Smoke Detector and Carbon Monoxide Detector at least once per year to be on the safe side. If you do not have these two detectors installed then it's highly recommended you do so.

DIY_U Bonus Tip:
Always be prepared for Emergencies and Surprises - Sometimes the winter months can be harsh leaving individuals and families without power, electricity and water. As a safety precautions try purchasing candles and matches you can use for lighting. Purchase bottled water, canned/non-perishable foods [including pet foods if you have pets], first-aid kits, extra blankets, lanterns and firewood. It's important to have a centralized location for all your items in the time of need so place them in well-known place to you and your family. Last but not least develop a list of emergency phone numbers and place them on your refrigerator or near your phone. This list should include your utility companies (electric, gas, water), phone company, local fire department, local police department, local hospital, and possibly your nearby neighbors.

The Truth About Paintless Dent Repair and Insurance Companies

In reality, paintless dent removal (PDR) is an industry-recognized repair process. This means that many car manufacturers not only endorse it, but they do it themselves for existing customers or when they want to resell a car. That's because it is the only dent removal practice that maintains the original surface and finish without any cracking, chipping, or need for repainting.

Most insurance companies also recognize the value of paintless dent repair, and will even recommend it to clients who file a claim for minor body damage caused by small dents or dings. Because it costs up to 70 percent less than repairs at a traditional auto paint and body shop, PDR helps insurance companies to keep their own premium costs down. In some cases, the savings are so great that insurance companies might even wave a deductible for a car owner who chooses PDR over traditional body repairs.

Everyone Saves Money with Paintless Dent Repair

One of the best things about paintless dent removal, however, is that many vehicle owners can sidestep the insurance question altogether. While cars, trucks, or SUVs with extensive damage might require you to file a claim, the low costs of painless dent repair means that it often comes in at less than what you might be expected to pay for a deductible - not to mention your increased rates once the insurance claim has been filed.

Most people and insurance companies also appreciate how quick paintless dent removal is - particularly when the services are mobile and come to your home or office. In most cases, the repairs can be completed and the vehicle ready to drive within one or two hours. This means there is no need for a rental car, alternate transportation, or lengthy waiting periods that often make the repair process a hassle for individuals on both sides of the insurance desk.

It doesn't matter whether you intend to go through your insurance company or are looking into getting paintless dent removal repairs yourself. It is a fast, easy solution that offers virtually perfect results.

Cutting Home Insurance Costs in a Bad Economy

Your home insurance costs may not come to mind when you are trying to save money, especially if your premium is part of your monthly payment. But in today's economic environment, your insurance costs should be one of the many expenses that you review. Why? Because there is the possibility that you can cut those costs without sacrificing protection.

Here are some questions to ask yourself about your current homeowners insurance policy:

1) Am I getting all of the discounts I'm qualified to receive?

Home insurance companies offer their customers discounts for a variety of reasons. Many times they give discounts if you decrease the risk of a loss. For example, you could receive a discount on your premium if you install a burglar alarm or have deadbolt locks.

You can also receive a multi-policy discount if you insure your vehicles with the same company that insures your home.

2) Can I handle a larger deductible?

The deductible is the amount of money you have to pay before the insurance coverage kicks in when you make a claim. The amount of your deductible also affects your premium. A lower deductible means you will pay more on your premium. Consider increasing your deductible to cut home insurance costs. Of course, you'll want to be sure you can come up with the deductible if you file a claim. One idea is to put the extra money you save on a lower insurance premium, into a savings account which you can pull from in the event of a claim.

3) Am I getting the best rate?

Insurance companies change their rates over time, and rates are different between companies. If you haven't shopped around and compared rates lately, you may be paying more than you need to for your coverage. You could save hundreds by doing some comparison shopping, time well spent. Use an online insurance comparison site to save you time.

4) Have I made any major improvements or purchases since I took out the policy?

Of course your life changes over time, and so does your insurance protection needs. Maybe you've added more stuff since taking out your policy, like home theater systems, computer equipment etc. You want to make sure it's adequately covered so contact your agent or company and ask. This may not save you money, but you wouldn't want to find out too late that something isn't covered.

Also, if you have made major home improvements you'll want to make sure they are covered as well. If these improvements include updated electrical, plumbing or roofing you may qualify for a money-saving discount.

When A Lover Cheats: Relationship Repair For Gay Couples; Part 1

Introduction

Nothing destroys the foundation of trust and security in a relationship quite like infidelity does. The gay community at large tends to accept more liberal forms of sexual expression. Without social norms precluding whats sexually appropriate or not in the context of an intimate relationship, gay men are in a position to choose for themselves the role sex plays in their relationships. As such, most gay couples develop a relationship contract of sorts as they begin to merge their lives together about monogamy vs. non-monogamy. For those couples who have agreed to be monogamous, a partners affair with another man can create a whirlwind of chaos and painand sometimes, the destruction of the relationship itself.

While many relationships dont survive an affair because of the difficulties involved in working through the betrayal and broken trust, many others are able to overcome the challenges and are able to cultivate an even better partnership than theyd had before. A couple can triumph over an affair! Part 1 of this article will examine the reasons behind an affair, and Part 2 will offer some practical tips on healing and moving forward for those couples who have decided to try and salvage their relationships.

He Cheated On Me!

When a lover cheats and the affair is revealed or discovered, the two men in the couple relationship both go through a grieving process. The psychology of the issues involved for each man in the couple is different, but there is a common backdrop of pain and shattered trust. Disillusionment sets in, and a flood of various emotions erupts. Anger, betrayal, guilt, disgust, defensiveness, depression, and numbness and shock are common emotional reactions, to just name a few.

You become preoccupied with the affair, unable to think of anything else and it can be hard to concentrate and control the racing thoughts and images your mind conjures up. Everything you thought you knew and believed in now comes into question and you can feel lost, confused, and abandoned. You wonder whats been real and whats been a farce from the inception of your relationship. Your self-esteem is wounded, you feel deceived, and your world feels like its been turned upside down. The sense of loss is profound and can be traumatizing. You then contemplate whether the relationship is worth fighting for.

Why We Are Unfaithful

Statistics among all sexual orientations indicate that infidelity is pervasive. There are many different reasons why we gay men may cheat on our partners. While certainly the problem may stem from one man in the couple (eg. sexual addiction), in my clinical experience, I have seen more cases of infidelity arising as a symptom of something thats troubling the relationship. The following are some possible underlying factors that contribute to the straying outside our primary relationships:

fear of commitment and/or intimacy; cheating as a way of staving off getting too close, being controlled, or being suffocated by ones partner

lack of gay monogamous role models

low self-esteem; seeking sex from other people as a validation of ones attractiveness and self-worth

boredom; a compelling need to seek thrills, risk, adventure, or variety

easy sexual access and availability

society, and gay culture itself, sexualizing gay men (just look at the ads in your local gay newspaper or magazine, for example!)

unhappiness in ones relationship; feeling unloved or unwanted; emotional distance in the partnership; unmet needs; acting-out because somethings missing; searching for emotional connection, attention, affection, and validation that one feels hes not getting from his partner

sexual problems in the relationship or lack of sexual intimacy

sexual addiction, poor impulse control, involvement of drugs and alcohol, or unresolved emotional problems, sexual abuse from the past, or a prior history of infidelity

purposeful attempt to hurt ones partner (power-plays, Ill show him! Ill get back at him by sleeping with)

incompatibility with ones partner; differing life philosophies and needs

Men in particular (both straight and gay) tend to be more at risk and susceptible for cheating on a lover because of the tendency toward being able to separate sex from emotions during sex.

These reasons are certainly not intended to be rationalizations or justifications for having an affair, but knowing your own underlying causes can help in beginning to problem-solve ways of treating the symptoms so that your relationship has a chance of successfully moving forward. No two affairs are alike, so its important to understand your unique relationship situation so you can remove the barriers that trigger you and prevent you from claiming the type of relationship you really want.

Conclusion

In Part 2 of this article (coming in the next Couples Edition of the newsletter), specific tips and strategies will be given for the man who cheated, the man who was cheated upon, and for the couple as a whole for rebuilding their relationship in the aftermath of an affair. In the interim, if you and your partner are in this situation of dealing with an infidelity, contemplate the following questions and points:

What does this affair mean to our relationship? What led up to it? Why did it happen?

In what ways did each of us contribute to this happening? What role did we each play and what are our responsibilities? Whats missing in our relationship? What needs work? What did we learn about ourselves as a result of this experience?

Can I forgive my partner and myself for whats happened? How does this all mesh with my personal requirements for a partner and relationship?

What do we need to do differently to ensure that this never happens again?

Remember that you are both suffering and that you both need extra support, reassurance, and understanding from each other right now. If you are truly committed to repairing your relationship, keep blame, finger-pointing, verbal aggression, and judgment out of the mix. Theres been enough pain already. Develop a vision for a positive outcome as a couple and keep centered on that as you go through the difficult grieving tasks involved in getting back on track again. And you can!

Appliance Home Repair

Do you have a sick appliance? Are you considering throwing it away and getting a new one because you don't want to be bothered with having a repairman charge you or come look at it and then end up paying for both the service call and the repair - or worse yet, paying for the service call and discovering that the repair is just too expensive anyway? What a waste of dollars, right? Well, if you are like most folks, you need to pinch your pennies a little bit tighter now that we are officially in a recession, so appliance home repair might be the next big thing and might give you the chance to keep your appliances longer without having to fork out the big bucks to a repairman in the process.

Appliance home repair may seem like a really scary idea - especially if you are a woman who has absolutely no experience with fixing anything, but let me just tell you - if I can do it, you can, too. Here is my story:

One day, as I was about to do my umpteenth load of laundry, I lifted the lid of my washing machine and off popped this little spring from somewhere under the hood. I knew that was wrong of course - I mean no appliance I supposed to have springs bouncing off of it - but I guess I was just hoping for the best. I shut the lid fully expecting the full washer to start washing my clothes. It didn't happen. I had to empty the washer with a bucket and pitcher so the water wouldn't stink, and I spent the next three months going to the Laundromat. Finally, one day, I got sick of it and sat down at my PC and typed in washer home repair. I really wasn't ready to fix it myself, but the appliance home repair site gave me some much-needed info. I discovered what that spring was and why my washer wouldn't do anything. I eventually called in a repairman, but I watched him carefully, and lo and behold, about four months later, my daughter had the same problem with her washing machine (same kind as mine). I went to the hardware store, got the part I needed, and about two hours later, my daughter was washing clothes again.

Appliance home repair can be learned, even by we women who never thought we would ever want or need to learn. I saw the respect in my grown daughter's eyes that day, and you can experience that, too.

Question for a Appliance Technician? Appliance home Repair is the place to visit.

Home Improvement Books Can Solve Problems

The other day, I was surfing the Internet and came upon an online home building bookstore that put together a website with the best-selling home building books on the market today. These books range from basic carpentry to advanced structural engineering and everything else you could possibly think of that could be related to the home building, selling, remodeling and construction process.

I couldn't believe the simple and easy to use. Here's a list of some of their books selections.

Photo Guide to Home Repair - The most up-to-date, complete, and useful guide to home repair a homeowner can have. With more than 350 projects and 2300 photos, virtually every home repair challenge.

Exterior Siding, Trim & Finishes - This first ever compilation by Fine Homebuilding on the popular subject provides builders with ideas for choosing the correct finishes for home exteriors, plus solid how-to information.

Flipping Houses - This book is designed for realty investors who want to profit from buying below market, making cosmetic improvements to add value, and then quickly reselling.

Bathroom Remodeling - Remodeling a bathroom is a challenge - it's action-oriented and requires extra energy and stamina. But you, undoubtedly, realize it's a challenge you want to take on.

One $20 home building books or home repairs book, can save you lots of money, if you're willing to do a little research and the labor to complete almost any home building project.

By the way, if you're interested in learning how to repair a roof, build your own house, interior decorating, structural engineering, building a deck, gathering some more information about home painting or even remodeling your bathroom. Our online home building bookstore can save you money if you're willing to do the work.

Auto Repair Facilities - Dealership Or Independent?

Automotive service and repair is something we all have to do or have done. But just like the old saying, "You can't judge a book by it's cover," the same goes for a lot of independent repair facilities and dealerships. I'm not suggesting that one is better than the other, but that there is good and bad in both. Finding the right one should keep your vehicle in excellent mechanical condition without breaking the bank.

So which one would you choose? Dealership service or local repair shops? Keep in mind that all dealerships are not the same, and that goes for local shops as well. You should be able to find quality service at both locations; however, some things to consider :

Who is working on my car? Get to know the person or people that service and repair your automobile. This usually isn't a problem at most local shops, but a lot of dealerships have a service writer to greet you and you may not get the chance to talk with the mechanic. That's almost like going to the doctor and being treated by the nurse without seeing or speaking to the doctor.

Reputation Ask around while your out shopping or at the post office. See what others say about an establishment and how long they have been serving the community. This may not be necessary if your are not new to the area or from near by, but it still may be some interesting info.

Shop Resources and Cleanliness Ask questions to find out if updated equipment and resources are available to your specific repair needs. It's not a crime to not know everything, but it's not good if you don't have the resources to find the correct answer. Shop cleanliness should not be the main deciding factor, but if the time is taken to be neat and tidy, then the extra time may be taken not to overlook simple items while your intake is laying on the bench.

Overhauls and High Mileage Autos Some dealerships and other shops don't work on vehicles with high mileage. So make sure you find a well rounded shop that can meet all your needs, regardless of what you drive.

Parts and Labor Ask for an estimate for the repairs that you may need and check for O.E.M. (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts to be installed. Labor rates can vary from $60.00 to $120.00 per labor hour and on up depending on geographic location and vehicle. You can research local rates and repair costs, but hopefully that gut feeling was right when you thought you found the place to trust with your vehicle, and all passengers within it.

Choosing the Right Camera to Purchase

When choosing the right camera to purchase you need to consider the following. Cameras are generally divided into two main categories: Point-and-shoot and Single Lens Reflex (also known as "SLR"). A Point-and-shoot Camera is any camera, digital or film, that does not have a removable lens.

Most point-and-shoots are compact and lightweight. They almost always have zoom capabilities (both optical and digital). If you're just starting out you probably already have a point and shoot camera. An SLR on the other hand, will have the ability to have removable or interchangeable lenses. In addition, they usually offer many more options for controlling the camera. You will be able to shoot in full automatic as well as full manual and several other types of modes like aperture or shutter priority. The biggest and probably most important, difference that distinguishes a digital point-and-shoot from a digital SLR is in the quality of the pictures each is capable of making.

While point-and-shoot cameras have their own advantages; They are light weight, easy to use and less expensive than an SLR. They cannot compete with an SLR in terms of image quality. That is because a digital SLR has a much larger image sensor and a larger image sensor produces a larger, higher quality pixel. This larger pixel produces a much higher quality image. The higher quality images produced with an SLR, because of its enlargement capabilities, will be saleable in many more markets than those taken with a point-and-shoot. Point and shoots may boast of having 8 or 10 mega pixels but the fact remains, their image sensors are smaller and this means the pixels are smaller also.

A Digital Point-and-shoot
Most professional photographers own a compact point-and-shoot camera that they carry with them most of the time. Some will even tell you they never leave home without it. I think we all can agree that a lower quality picture taken with a point-and-shoot is better than no picture at all. When you're buying a compact point-and-shoot, try to get one that has at least five to 8 mega pixels.

If your camera comes with "digital" zoom, don't use it. Turn it off. Digital zooms are only enlarging a very small part of an already small sensor. While it may look OK on the computer, it will not print well. Most cameras allow you to turn off the digital zoom setting. You should do that and ignore anything the salesman tells you about digital zoom. A good camera should have at least a 3 x "optical" zoom. The best have at least a 6 to 8 x optical zoom. This means that the lens itself is changing the focal length and still using the full image sensor unlike the digital zoom. If the camera doesn't have a good optical zoom, don't buy it. You are wasting your money.

The size of the LCD screen is also important. The larger the better. If you have bad eyes, the LCD screen quality and size are of prime importance.

Stay with established name brands like Nikon and Canon. They make great point-and-shoot cameras. They're usually at the top of the line. Sony has some good point-and-shoots, too, but all their equipment is proprietary. This means it doesn't mix well with equipment and accessories of other brands.

Digital SLR Cameras
Most professional photographers will tell you that their preference in camera brands is largely dependent on how the camera feels and handles as well as ease of operation. High quality sensors and pixels are a given for any brand name camera in today's highly competitive market. All professional grade cameras are ruggedly built and many have a fair amount of water resistance. With those in the water resistant group, you can shoot in the rain, sleet, and snow and never have a problem.

The major players in digital SLR photography today are Canon, Nikon, and Olympus, with Canon and Nikon in the lead. The major advantage to sticking with these brands is that they've been at this for a long time. They're not likely to go out of business (leaving you with a bunch of equipment you can't sell off, upgrade, or repair). And if you stick with Canon or Nikon, you'll have a large selection of accessories to choose from.
The rest comes down to price. More expensive cameras give you more durability as well larger sensor sizes. More expensive cameras with higher quality sensors will also take better photographs at higher ISOs with less noise in the shadow areas.

Choosing the right SLR for you
Price alone will help you target your search while brand name will help you narrow your options even further. Nikon and Canon are the biggest players. Both make really great cameras and have a large selection of lenses and accessories. Either brand will be easy to resell when you're ready to upgrade.

Beware of Sony. Sony cameras need special adapters when you want to use anything that's not made by the Sony brand -- studio lights, external flashes, etc. Using Sony equipment is usually more problem than it is worth.

Yale Economic Journal Says Economy Won't Slow Green Consumerism - I Say Bull!

Call me esoteric, but one periodical I like to read is the Yale Economic Journal. Why you ask? Well, not because I believe everything in it, rather I realize the incredible power that school has in the present period, many of the students that go there, are later elevated to high office or Wall Street insider jobs. Not long ago an article in the Yale Economic Journal stated that: "The Slow Economy Won't Slow Green Consumerism."

Well, as the economic advisor to the Online Think Tank, I have to disagree, as there is no business that is not affected in some way by economic cycles. And a SmartCar still costs some $30,000 and let's not forget installing solar panels on a home is not cheap either and financing is not as easy as it once was for home equity loans, Re-Fis or second mortgages.

Now then, it ought be obvious to everyone that the next "bubble" like the Silicon Valley Bubble and the Housing Bubble will be the "green tech" bubble. And funding for green tech will continue into the future whether or not any of these latest technological breakthroughs or the companies that produce them ever make a profit.

So, whereas the green industry will be robust, which I will give the Yale Economic Journal that, I still cannot buy into concept that this current economy (if it gets much worse) will not slow the purchases of green tech by consumers. Anyone who purports otherwise is just involved in silly rhetoric, wishful thinking and pie-in-the-blue-sky business plan proformas. Think on this.

Can Home Selling Books Save You Money?

I was talking to a friend of mine, who had just purchased a new home about two months ago and he was practically yelling at me as he was talking about all the problems that he had with his realtor and previous homeowner. He was so mad, he had forgot about the problems he had with the home inspection. My friend was usually a very easy going and calm individual but this had upset him and almost turned him into an irrational person.

As I was calming him down and trying to get to the core of the problem, it seem like he didn't have enough information about buying or selling homes. He was confused with all the paperwork that was involved during the entire process. His real estate salesperson had him sign a contract that wouldn't let him use another realtor for a specific period of time. He really didn't know what he was signing and according to him, it wasn't explained properly to him.

After a couple of weeks of shopping for a new home, he became irritated with the realtor and wanted to end the relationship. Think again, said the realtor as he explained to my friend that they had a binding contract and his current realtor would get a percentage of the transaction, no matter what for that specific period of time. Was my friend mad, he was practically foaming at the mouth as he was telling me about the real estate professional.

It didn't stop here and they don't want to go into a long story about the real estate transaction from purgatory. My friends pain had come from the fact, that he had purchased a home 15 years ago and it was a smooth transaction and he was under the impression that buying and selling homes was a simple process.

I handed my friend a book called "The Consumer's Guide to Home Buying" and asked him if this book would have been helpful, before he started shopping for a home. I was curious because I build websites and do a lot are writing on the Internet. I told him to take the book home and I would get back with him, in a few weeks.

He contacted me the next day and couldn't believe the information he gained, just by scanning through the book in a few hours. He started to get mad at me for not giving him this book, before all the home buying problems occurred. I informed him quite simply that he had never even told me, he was looking for a home.

Can home selling books save you money, you bet they can.

Bathroom Remodeling Can Be Kept Simple and Cheap

What do you want from your bathroom?

Do you want it to be more than clinically cold and merely functional? The trend today is towards making bathrooms a warm, friendly place to be, a place where you don't mind spending a fair amount of time in. Lets face it, we all have to use the bathroom sooner or later and it's probably the most used room in the house.

If you are planning to remodel your bathroom you should try to provide an experience for the users of the room and that includes yourself. Try to think beyond the simple utility of being a place to wash in.

How ambitious is your bathroom-remodeling project?

When you remodel your bathroom a lot will depend on how much space you have available and how extensive you want your bathroom remodel to be. When I remodeled my bathroom it all started because I dropped something into the bathtub and cracked it. That meant that the bath had to be replaced but I could have stopped there instead of taking the opportunity to replace everything, rearrange the bathroom and add a shower cubicle. Oh yes and I spent a lot of money too.

You don't have to be that ambitious

As long as your bathroom fittings are in working order you don't need to replace them. There is a lot you can do by adding storage space to get things off the floor, replace some tiling that may have seen better days. Giving the place a simple coat of paint can work wonders also. Even if you do need to replace some items like I did then replacing it with a similar item in the same position can be a lot cheaper than a full blown remodel.

How about a few plants?

If you have the space in your bathroom you might like to add a few pot plants here and there. They can hide the more drab aspects of your bathroom and provide a point of interest for anyone using the room. Some people like to talk to plants but don't like others to know that they do so being alone in a bathroom with some nice plants can be very therapeutic.

Think about the lighting

Lighting can make a big difference and adding some nice warm, soothing light that makes you feel cosy and at home can enhance your experience of the bathroom in a very subtle and pleasant way.

Keep it clean and shiny

Often all a bathroom needs is a good clean. Polish the metal work in the room, the faucets and towel rails etc. Make sure that you remove all the lime scale that has built up over the years. Clean the tiles on the walls so that they gleam like new. Do all this and keep it all clean by going over it once a week. It can make your bathroom look as good as if you'd done a complete bathroom remodel. It's also quicker, a lot less stressful and will save you loads of money.

What to do if you're thinking of a more ambitious bathroom remodel

If you've got plenty of money, time and enthusiasm then you may want to do something a bit more radical than simply clean or paint your bathroom. The article href="http://www.bathroomsremodeling.this-info.com/bathroom-remodeling-idea.php">Bathroom Remodeling Idea - How to get inspiration will give you some inspiration on how to get started on a more ambitious project.

Sloping Floors in Your House

If you've ever been in a building where you feel like you are getting pushed to one side and you can't seem to stand up. You have either been drinking too much alcohol or the floor could be sloping. I was just in a store the other day that was full of antiques and glass but I could hardly stand up because the floor was sloping enough to create what I would consider a liability issue to the store owner.

Sloping floors are not going to be that easy to fix and repair. Repairing these floors will require a little skill and it would be a good idea to hire a professional to repair the damage. This is not going to be a simple fix and this is probably the main reason most people never choose to fix their sloping floors.

Fixing these floors will require either pouring a new concrete slab, replacing the wood floor framing members or replacing the actual building foundation itself. No matter how you look at it the sloping floor is going to be a costly item to repair.

What causes a sloping floor? Termite damage or dry rot destroying the wood framing or it could be as simple as a water leak over a long period of time causing the building foundation to sink and become out of level. Poor soil conditions with either too sandy or an expansive clay soil could be the culprit also.

Sloping floors can be damaged from incorrect landscape drainage. This would involve water settling around the foundation of your home and over a period of time the weight of the house along with soil problems can create the building to start sloping to one side.

The number one contributor to a sloping floor again like most damage done to a house is going to be water. Do your best to keep the water away from the house using roof gutters and landscape drains. These items are relatively inexpensive compared to the costs involved in repairing sloping floors.

Patio - How to Build Your Own

Before you start a patio or any other home improvement work, make sure you have the time and commitment to see it through. It might have only taken the builder 2 or 3 days to do your neighbours patio but he's doing it for money. After a hard days digging its easy to think sod this, I'll finish it next weekend. The next thing you know your garden spends the whole summer looking like a building site and your wife takes herself and the kids to her mothers!

Planning your patio. Keep it nice and simple, forget curves and other fancy shapes. Choose a paving slab that matches the colour of your house, you want it to blend in not stand out like a sore thumb. Plan the size of your patio to suit the size of your slabs so that minimal cutting is not required. Remember to allow 10mm for each joint when measuring out your area.

Tools required. A spade and shovel. A fork if grass needs to be removed. A rubber mallet. A spirit level. Lines and pegs. Wheelbarrow. Safety gloves.

From the hire shop. Small cement mixer and compactor (also known as a wacca) plate. If cuts are required an angle grinder or disc cutter with safety goggles.

Marking out. Use pegs and lines to mark out your area. To check your angles measure from corner to corner. The distance between corners 1 and 3 should measure the same as corners 2 and 4.

Digging out. You should dig down about 100mm (4inch). As your patio is going to butt up to your home you must make sure that the top of the paving slabs will finish at least 150mm below your damp course. Also, it is important that your patio slopes away from your house. 2.5cm for every 2m or 1inch for every 6ft.

If you are only digging out top soil you should be able to get away with dispersing it around your garden. Anything else and you will require a skip.

Laying the hard core. Spread the hard core approx. 100mm (4inch) deep. Run the wacca plate over the hardcore, adding more to any low points. Your hardcore should finish about 75mm (3inch) in depth and should be solid under foot.

Laying your slabs. Mix sand and cement without water at a ratio of 5 sand to 1 cement. If you are using a small mixer, 10 shovels of sand and 2 of cement is just enough for the mixer and gives you a good wheelbarrow full.

Spread out your sand and cement mix in a corner. If you are butting up to your house, start against the wall. Using a straight edge such as a length of 2x4 timber, level out the mix. It wants to be fairly firm but not so firm that you can't tap down the slabs into place.

Place your first slab down and tap it in place with your rubber mallet. If the mix hasn't been packed down too hard you should be able to position the slab. Use your level to make sure this first slab is bang on. All the other slabs work from this one so take your time to make sure its correct. It wants to be level following the brickwork of your house but with a very slight slope away from your home.

Always work off the hardcore. Don't stand on your paving slabs for a few days while the sand and cement sets. Use a spirit level to check each slab as you lay them. If a slab goes down too easy, lift it and spread more sand and cement.

Once you have laid several square metres worth of your paving slabs, spread some mix on top and brush it into the joints. You may have to do this several times as the mix settles in the joints.

Alternatives. Consider using block pavers instead of slabs or building your patio in decking. If your patio needs to be raised because it finishes above ground level you will need to build a base. An alternative to raising in brick is to use railway sleepers.

Walking on Your Roof Safely

Here's some things to think about before walking on the roof of a house. If you slip and fall off the roof you could get hurt seriously. For your own safety if you have no experience walking on a roof use extreme caution. I would even suggest using a ladder and moving the latter around the perimeter of the house if you are inspecting the roof for damage.

Here's some things to keep in mind before walking on a house roof.

1. If the building is above two stories hire a contractor especially if you think the roof has building damage.

2. If the roof is too steep stay off. This could be extremely hazardous to your health.

3. If the roof is severely damaged and has loose shingles or tiles, this could create a safety hazard as you slip on one of these loose shingles and possibly fall off the roof.

4. You should stay off the roof at all costs if there is snow or ice. Ice obviously is extremely slippery and would be difficult to walk on. The difficulty would be increased if the roof has a steep slope.

5. Now last but not least if the roof is wet you should avoid walking on it until it is dry. I have been on wet roofs before and personally slipped myself losing my balance but not falling off of the roof.

Climbing up on a roof and walking around is not child's play and should be left to an experienced professional . If you feel comfortable walking around on any roof please use caution. If you slip in the middle of the roof there is a good chance you will be able to regain your balance or have time to stop yourself before falling off.

I would suggest using caution near the edges of the roof. If the roof is too steep or you don't feel comfortable, why risk serious injury. Use common sense along with the proper ladders to ensure your safety and "Think before walking on a house roof."

Commercial Kitchen Equipment Layout

Ask grizzled veterans of the restaurant industry and they will tell you that in distinctive and progressive commercial kitchen equipment layout lies the secret to creating an exceptionally mesmerizing experience for both members of the putative divide that is both the owner and the customer.

Don't Treat Equipment Selection Flippantly

You may be making forays into the restaurant business, rather diffidently, but the fact is that you cannot treat the singularly important issue of equipment selection and layout with derision. It is with their sustained efforts that you can deliver a unique sensory experience to every customer at your doorstep.

Considering the fact that different eateries entice customers with an eclectic set of delectable delights, one cannot expect all of them to use the same kind of products.

But things do not always stand at polar ends. All commercial kitchens through the ages have followed a specific set of rules when it comes to the ostensibly daunting task of selection and layout of equipments. These include:

  • Pots and pans: A nifty restaurateur will always have a veritable mosaic of pots and pans to woo clients. There is a massive assortment of highly advanced restaurant sets that encompass everything from frying pans and gravy pots to saut pans and boiling pots. The staggering array of pots and pans will enable your eatery to sizzle like never before. But make sure you spare some thought to the durability and functionality of these sets.
  • Knives: Cutting-edge is not always used to describe technology and innovation. A wonderful collection of high-quality knives will help you slice through intense competition. Since everything ranging from meats to desserts has to make the cut, there is no reason to slash your investment in this department.
  • Appliances: You will also require the unstinted support of a truckload of appliances like the microwave, dishwasher and a stove to make your journey into the hearts of customers less tedious. Issues like warranty, repair agreement and quality cannot be relegated to obscurity. Above all, you should be able to haul all of them with unmatched confidence.

So are you ready to establish a dialogue with your equipments?

The Do it Yourself Basement Remodeling Guide

There are certain basic thing to remember when you plan to do a do it yourself basement remodeling. It is good to remodel your basement according to how it is going to be used. It will also allow you to enhance the appearance of the basement itself.

1. What are you going to use the basement for?

Planning for a do it yourself basement remodeling, should always begin with deciding what you are going to turn the basement into. Is it going to be a play room for the kids or a wine cellar? Will you be adding a bathroom or a fire place?

2. Fix any existing problems.

Existing problems in your basement should be remedied at this point. Make sure that your basement is free from leaks. Check the walls and the foundation for any cracks or holes. Make sure that you seal the cracks and fill in the holes properly. If not, all your hard work will be destroyed by water or moisture that leaks in. The foundation should also be in top shape. Make sure that it is not bowed.

3. Make sure that the basement is insulated and well heated.

Check the existing furnace if it is able to heat the basement efficiently. If not, you should probably consider replacing it or adding another one. Insulating your walls will also help in keeping the basement warm. Some companies offer electric floor heating that will not only keep the room warmer but will also fight off the growth of mold and mildew. You may also add a fire place to help in maintaining a warm room temperature but make sure that it is compatible with how your basement is going to be utilized.

4. Design your basement.

Design your basement according to its use. If it will be a recreational room, bring down that home-theater system. If you will use it as a workshop, put shelves and cabinets to store your tools. A painting studio will definitely need natural light. Add windows. For a kids play room, choose bright colors and make sure that the room is kid-friendly. The visual design of your basement will depend on your personal style.

5. Don't forget the lights.

Adding windows to a basement that is partially above ground is a good way to let natural light in. Regardless of having basement windows or not, it is important that you also put artificial lights in your basement. Strategically place the lights around the room. Choose from different kinds and sizes of lights that match your basement design.

These do it yourself basement remodeling tips will definitely turn any dark and old basement into a bright and lively room that is going to add another exceptional room to your home.

Hiring a Great Pool Removal Contractor

For some, removing a swimming pool may seem like removing a house. Once you realize it can be done, you may be thinking...but how? How can a huge, concrete based pool that takes up my entire yard be removed safely and efficiently? All kinds of questions may be going through your mind: Will we disrupt the neighbors? How will they get a bulldozer into my yard? What if they hit a gas or water line? Lets face it, fear and anxiety are the emotions we feel when faced with the unknown. These are the emotions that make scary movies, giant roller coasters and haunted houses so compelling, but when you are hiring a pool removal contractor the last thing you want to feel is fear. So how do you handle this process? How do you hire a pool removal contractor in the bay area or anywhere else? The best way to do it is to simply eliminate the unknowns.

When it comes to hiring a swimming pool removal company here is the best advice I can give you: Hire a company that has removed a lot of pools. That's it. It's just that simple. Practice really does make perfect. Plus, there's a reason why a particular contractor has done a lot of work. People trust them - they have a track record. It's no different than if you needed brain surgery and you were interviewing surgeons. If the doctor told you it would be his first, but another other one had done a hundred procedures, who would you pick? You'd probably be concerned about the outcome if you chose the first doctor. Same goes for pool removal. Pick a contractor that knows their stuff!

So, you have started the search. You are calling contractors and talking to friends. How much experience should your pool demolition contractor have? One hundred pools or more certainly would be a high benchmark. If a company has removed that many swimming pools, they understand all the pitfalls and problems that can arise. That makes it much more likely your job will get done right and in a timely manner. It's an important job, one you want done right. Going with the right contractor could mean the difference between getting it done cleanly and simply in just a few days versus it taking weeks and potential legal hassles. Keep it simple.

Here's another bit of advice: Always check the references of pool removal contractors. People have been getting burned by contractors of all types for years because of not following this step. You especially want to do this if you live in an area where there aren't a lot of in-ground swimming pools. The chances of any one contractor having a great deal of pool removal experience won't be high. The important thing is that you can verify the jobs they have done, and see if their customers were satisfied with the contractors work. Do yourself a favor, check them once and check them twice - call at least 3-5 of their former customers. See what they thought of the work performed. It could save you a huge headache later.

The other thing I always tell people concerns money: Be very leery about giving a contractor money in advance. Did you know that most states have laws about how much money a contractor can ask for up front? Its true. It seems that people have been getting burned by contractors for so long, that the government finally had to step in. If you are serious about your pool removal and want to do it right, you might make it a point to know what your state law is regarding this. Generally, it's a very small percentage of the contract price. In cases where permit fees are high and it takes a long time to get approval, contractors may want the customers to cover those costs. Bottom line: If a contractor asks for a lot of money up front, do yourself a favor: don't do it!

The main point I want to get across is this: do a little home work before hiring a contractor. A pool removal is a big deal. It can be expensive. You really need to ensure that it is done professionally, and at the right price. Whatever you do, don't go with the first bid that comes your way. And if a particular contractor seemed a little shady - trust your instincts, they probably are. Keep looking! When you have confidence that your contractor can deliver, then you can relax and actually enjoy the process. Think about it: your new backyard and new lifestyle are waiting!

Best Methods to Protect Your Home During a Building Project

If you are a homeowner and undergoing renovation in your house, you must have noticed the debris, paint stains and other things scattered around the house along with the heavy machinery being used which contribute to destroying the furniture, paint, and other valuables in the house.

As an owner if you are living in the house during the building period, you need to be proactive about making sure that there is no damage occurring to your house or to valuables in your house which may require extra money and time to get fixed later on. You can take a few precautions to keep yourself safe from facing this situation by following the tips below:

1. Start the renovation process from one room or region at a time. If the entire project is started together, you will lose access to most of the house. Moreover, getting things done regionally is simpler, especially if you are living in the house while the renovation is being done. The region where the work is happening should be sealed off from the rest of the house to prevent dust from spreading everywhere. Close all doors and windows, and tape plastic over them. Make sure you also cover vents, grates, and heating ducts.

2. Shift everything that can be easily moved from the building area. This may include removing appliances, kitchen accessories, personal items and toys as well as small furniture etc. Cover everything left in the area with sheets, and invest in the temporary protective materials to protect them during the building process. You can get foam for door frames and railings, as well as adhesive sheets for floors, windows, worktops, and other surfaces. These will prevent any damage from happening which may occur as a result of another heavy object hitting them while being moved, or from paint getting all over them during a paint job.

3. Put a damp mat outside the door leading to the building area to catch the dust from the dirty shoes that would otherwise track dust into the house. You can also ask the builders to lightly mist the surfaces before they start work to reduce the amount of dust that may rise in the air.

4. If you have a garden, cover it with a drop cloth to save it from debris and damage. Furthermore, this will keep lead from getting into the soil. Set up boundaries that you want the builders to avoid by marking them with tape. Make sure you tell them to keep any supplies they get away from this area. This will go a long way in protecting your garden.

5. Make sure, the workers clean the work site at the end of the day so you can use it in the evening. Collect all the debris and throw it away every day to prevent it from piling up.

Protecting your home during a building project is not very difficult if you plan beforehand, and make sure that the builders follow your instructions. By following these tips you can keep your home in perfect condition even while it is undergoing renovation.

Garage Workbenches - Building Your Own

If you're a handyman, you need a workbench in the garage. A real handyman can build one if room is available, and the workbench is the essential first step before true creativeness of an inventor or handyman can be let loose.

Prior to beginning building of the workbench, accurate measurements of the space available are needed. This ensures the design will fit the available space and still leave room for any cars or other items to be parked in the garage along side the workbench.

Depending on the type of work you do, you may need to move oversized or heavy items from your vehicle to the workspace often enough to consider location during the planning process. Availability of electrical power is also a consideration during the planning phase for a workbench, although it's usually a cinch for an electrician to tap some power to any location in the garage for the cost of a service call.

Once location and size are decided on, it's time to consider the detailed design of the workbench. Three requirements of any workbench are:

1 - Plenty of room for laying out materials likely to be used often.

2 - Tool storage space - pegboard, cabinets or shelves, consider the tool space you will need, and how you would prefer.

3 - Fixture space is needed for a vice clamp to hold your work, a grinder, or other equipment that your work will commonly involve.

With your workbench design ready to satisfy the above three requirements to one degree or another, it's time to start work. Gather together all the supplies tools needed - nuts and bolts, nails, screws, etc. If varnish or painting the workbench is part of your plans, you'll need those supplies too.

Building your own workbench gives good practice when handling more complicated projects. Since a workbench is not a decorative piece of furniture, finish and perfection are not required. Another advantage to building your own, is that standard pre-fabricated workbenches available for purchase are mass produced in sizes that might not fit the space you have available.

By building your own garage workbench, you can decide on the particular specifications for every aspect of the bench. Every feature has a purpose, and no space is wasted. If you're building from scratch or using someone elses blueprints, modified or not, you've got a sturdy piece of garage equipment that will easily surpass the quality of any mass produced, once size fits all workbench for purchase.

ANSWERS

Question 1

A=10, B=8, C=6, D=4, E=2

Open two-way communication sums up a positive team atmosphere. Everyone feel comfortable sharing feelings with others because they know their positions are important; their thoughts heard, and feelings considered.

Question 2

A=4, B=10, C=2, D=8, E=6

Team members are free to take reasonable risks and to experiment with ideas. There are no failures only opportunities of growth and learning. A self-managing team does not place blame, but has a norm of individual responsibility and initiative. Team members understand that good "followership" means accepting responsibility. They take the initiative to influence other team members and the teams direction.

Question 3

A=10, B=8, C=6, D=4, E=2

When trust is lacking, members protect themselves from other team members through political maneuvering and partisanship. Deception and infighting, not cooperation and honest communication, are the acceptable behaviors.

Question 4

A=2, B=4, C=6, D=8, E=10

The team has a we-ness attitude. They work for a common and understood goal. They are willing to subordinate I need for the we. They think in terms of team gains and do not exhibit competition between team members.

Question 5

A=2, B=4, C=6, D=8, E=10

Differences of opinions and conflicts are suppressed. Those who withhold information will hide behind, "If you can't say anything constructive, don't say anything at all" attitude. Contrast this to a positive team atmosphere where conflicts and differences are openly discussed. The team will not seek a winner or looser but to use conflict to benefit the communication and problem solving process in the team. Effective teams will use to their advantage and will not shy away from conflict.

Question 6

A=6, B=10, C=8, D=2, E=4

The team members feel that they are valuable to the team. As a result, they do not have to compete for air time. An attitude that everyone's opinions and views need to be seriously considered exists. Everyone, including those who are not the top performer are given time to express their views and the opportunity to influence the team.

Question 7

A=10, B=2, C=6, D= 4, E=8

Team members will put up a faade in an untrusting, non-supportive environment. They feel that letting people know who they really are would result in them being vulnerable and hurt. In a positive team atmosphere, differences are seen as strengths, not weaknesses. Members feel differences between people need to be understood; and all need to be accepted as assets for better team building performance.

Question 8

A=10, B=8, C=6, D=4, E=2

A willingness to take risks, express opinions, and venture new or different ideas is typical of a supportive atmosphere. Team members feel they are listened to and not belittled for openly expressing their viewpoints. Placing blame and criticizing is not part of the effective team's atmosphere.

Question 9

A=2, B=4, C=6, D=8, E=10

Hidden agendas and posturing for power are the rules in a team that has a poor atmosphere. Honest discussion of needs, expectations, and goals leads to increased team building and teamwork.

Question 10

A=10, B=6, C=8, D=4, E=2

The foundation for a high quality team atmosphere is trust. Without it, some teams never develop to operate beyond a level of a committee or a ask force group. These team members are concerned with issues of power, authority, competition for attention, and political maneuvering; not in establishing a cohesive and effective team.

Your Team Building Score

80-100- Great News! You have a healthy team atmosphere. It is conducive to achieving great results. Your team can spend their time performing the work of the team, productively establishing goals, procedures, processes, and clarifying team members roles, i.e. Since atmosphere can change, you should periodically test the temperature of the atmosphere, to see if inhibiting issues or concerns in the maintenance of this productive atmosphere are openly discussed and dealt with.

60-79- On the surface, your team is healthy and productive. However, a few key areas keep this team from developing to its full potential. If not addressed, these areas will fester and create debilitating problems. Now is the time to bring these into the open, then work with your team to establish ways to improve.

Below 60-You are not a team but a group of people. Individuality reigns supreme, and there is very little sense of cohesiveness. This could be because you are a new team, or one that has never openly and candidly discussed how you work, or don't work together as a team. A more formal approach to team building can help your group get over this stage in their development. Ignoring the problems will not make them go away. To become an effective team will require a pro-active approach from both the team leader and members.
